Archbishop Henryk Hoser, spoke of various aspects of the upcoming Synod of the Family at the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Florian in Poland, in a report carried by  Niedziela.

The archbishop of Warsaw-Praga pointed out that St. Pope John Paul II's Familiaris Consortio was "an extremely valuable handbook for the pastoral care of the family". The Archbishop stated that the Pope-Saint had anticipated all contemporary problems, and that the solutions to "difficult cases and irregular marriage and family situations giving a very clear indication on how to deal with them". The Archbishop also pointed out the tragedy that in many countries separation and/or divorce reach rates as high as 60-70%.

As to the upcoming Synod he said:  "The Church does not fall apart and sink. I believe that during the Synod the Holy Spirit will be present. "

Archbishop Hoser points to the near universal rejection of Humane Vitae as the nexus of rebellion: "...some bishops openly said that the Church can change Her doctrine on human procreation. Meanwhile, it turned out to be something completely different. The Holy Father, following the voice of the minority did not change anything taught by his predecessors..."

Following the dissent from Humanae Vitae, Archbishop Hoser said: "Since then there has been a systematic contestation of the teaching of the Church in all areas. As a result, there have been massive departure of priests from the priesthood and consecrated persons with congregations and thus also the departure of the faithful".

The Archbishop did leave us a warning  however regarding the Holy Spirit's involvement at the upcoming Synod:: If we 'run out' of prayer, the Synod may not deliver the fruit we expect: and we expect a lot: new light, a new breath, a new perspective, new solutions and new courage to proclaim that the family that comes from God's plan of love and mercy is the singular form worthy to communicate love and life to the next generation"

This is what happened when I thought, many years ago, it was reasonable to reject the Church's teaching on artificial birth control - never again!
