Bonfire Night and the Burning of the Pope

A picture speaks a thousand words. In Lewes, England, a strange event takes place every November 5th in which a mob celebrate the gruesome torture and death of Guy Fawkes. Sadly, the Pope is also burnt in effigy.... the event is even enough to cause an Ulster Protestant to blush.

Update:

For me, this is particularly sad, as I have been to Lewes, and know the area quite well. Yet, under the cover of an idyllic town, in the hearts of some, lies a burning hatred of Christ and his Church.

Yet, let this not end in hate for hatred, but prayers for the conversion of these deluded souls, to the faith of their forefathers. The English and Welsh Martyrs did not die in vain.

As Freyr commented:

"First you create a straw man and then you tear it down in the interest of protecting the state or the people or some such. This allows you to focus the peoples' hate on some external enemy and away from your own activities. It is especially ominous when such hate becomes part of the cultural heritage of a community".

What no mention of the 17 Protestant 'hetetics' burned in Lewes by the Roman Catholic Church?

Richly ironic that you invoke Hitler's Germany (clearly you've never heard of Godwin's Law) when Hitler himself was raised a Catholic and was merely mining centuries of anti-Jewish Catholic propaganda when he began to implement the Holocaust. Please think twice before you bandy around scandalous, hysteric comparisons. - VVV

I thank God that He enlightened the reformers all those years ago, I thank God we have moved from the dark ages of the Roman Catholic church with all its tradition, religion and dogma. Things that Christ rejected.

When Jesus died and rose again from the cross it was finished, He done it all. Jesus and Jesus only intercedes with the father.

John 14:6 Jesus says 'I am the way the truth and the life, no one can come to the Father except through me'.

First Timothy 2:5 says that 'there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus'.

The Holy Father is the Lord God not a man in Rome or anywhere else. To call a man Holy Father is blasphemous.

To worship Mary and idols is in complete contradiction of the second commandment. Yes the commandment that the Roman Catholic church has decided to remove and instead break the tenth commandment into 2 so as to still have 10. Why is this? After all these were the commandments as given to Moses by God himself. Does the Roman Catholic church believe they are above God and therefore know better? or would it be because it doesn't fit in with Roman Catholic tradition and if you were to keep the commandment regarding idol worship the great vatican bank might not be as full as it currently is?

Each and every one of you, Priests, Bishops , Cardinals and Popes, who are deceiving the hundreds of millions of people around the world will one day have to stand in front of Almighty God and answer for yourselves. I pray you repent and turn away from your ways before it is to late.

Guy Fawkes is burned to remind us each year that the roman chatholic church tried to blow up and kill the paliment building as free Christian thinking wasn't allowed in Europe. Martyrs you seem to forget the English men and women put to death by Rome the martyrs you speak of were traitors who seeing that in England were people could read the bible in their own language and relise the great untruths taught by the roman church thought by force they would kill the very monarch that supported the free speach she protected, garner Plymouth Devon

The above posts are essential reading for those who believe that anti-Catholicism does not exist.

I implore those separated brothers to follow Cardinal Newman's example and to study the history of the Church. If you have an initial aversion to the Papacy, I suggest to you, brothers, to at least explore eastern Orthodoxy...

Anti Catholicism / No Popery is a theological position regarding the teachings of the Church of Rome and should never manifest itself in discrimination against individuals

Brother, my faith comes from the Holy Spirit convicting me of my sinan bringing me to repentance. The Open Bible contains all I need for edification albeit it is good fit brethren to gather together and worship the Lord.

Dear Anonymous, who said, "Richly ironic that you invoke Hitler's Germany.." It's richly ironic that you invoke Hitler's former Catholicism. Hitler was a lapsed Catholic and very likely a practicing homosexual as he was thrown out of the military early in his career for acts of sodomy. He absolutely hated Catholics. He killed more Catholics than Jews in the death camps. It was common practice among his troops when they had to work at the death camps or undertake some other unpleasant task of murder to commit adultery, and then go to Holy Communion. By that means, they were completely able to sever any remaining bits of compassion from their conscience. God bless you. Susan Fox

Dear Anonymous, who said, "I thank God … " Roman Catholics do not worship Mary or the saints. We treat them as friends. And as friends we ask them to pray for us. This is based on Jesus Christ's own teaching: from Luke 20:27-38. "Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection. But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.” You think we are involved in necromancy by honoring the saints. But we are talking to the living. And I can ask you to pray for me, and vice versa. Also Jesus demonstrated it is okay to talk to the saints at the Transfiguration when he spoke to Moses and Elijah. Plus he humbly accepted the ministry of a privileged angel during His agony in the garden. You can read more at" "And Why Do We Venerate the Saints? Is that Idolatry?" http://christsfaithfulwitness.blogspot.com/2012/10/welcome-wayne-and-why-do-we-venerate.html

In reflecting on this subject, it distresses us to see how we, the promoter of such reconciliation, are regarded by many of the separated brethren as being its stumbling-block, because of the primacy of honor and jurisdiction which Christ bestowed upon the Apostle Peter, and which we have inherited from him.

Do not some of them say that if it were not for the primacy of the Pope, the reunion of the separated churches with the Catholic Church would be easy?

We beg the separated brethren to consider the inconsistency of this position, not only in that, without the Pope the Catholic Church would no longer be Catholic, but also because, without the supreme, efficacious and decisive pastoral office of Peter the unity of the Church of Christ would utterly collapse.

It would be vain to look for other principles of unity in place of the one established by Christ Himself. As St. Jerome justly wrote: "There would arise in the Church as many sects as there are priests." We should also like to observe that this fundamental principle of Holy Church has not as its objective a supremacy of spiritual pride and human domination. It is a primacy of service, of ministration, of love. It is not empty rhetoric which confers upon the Vicar of Christ the title of "Servant of the Servants of God." POpe Paul VI

Popery Is Not A Religion : In fact, Popery is not a religion at all, Oh No ; and it is a sad delusion to suppose, that a mere difference of creed is all that exists between Protestants and Papists. Popery is a political conspiracy to subjugate empires, kingdoms, thrones, and states, to one tyrant, “who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he, as God, sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God” (2 Thess. ii. 4).
To accomplish this political purpose, his agents assume a priestly authority, and arrogate to themselves the power to save or to damn souls. Thousands of their infatuated vassals believe this, and, consequently, dare not refuse to do and say anything and everything which these vested wretches command. They wear the name of Christianity, as Satan transforms himself into an angel of light, to deceive (2 Cor. ii. 14).
They are his ministers, and not Christ’s; and they are going out “to deceive the nations,” in order to put all people, all power, and all property, “Yea, and every man’s conscience and life, under their despotic sway; and will Englishmen, will Christians, submit to this monster?”
Rev. Joseph Irons, Grove Chapel, Camberwell, London, 5th November 1837.

What a lot of bitter, bigoted Protestant heretics have commented here on this article! They spit on the graves of their Catholic ancestors. When St. Edmund Campion heard the verdict that he was to be hang, drawn and quartered, he proclaimed: "In condemning us, you condemn all your own ancestors, all our ancient bishops and kings, all that was once the glory of England — the island of saints, and the most devoted child of the See of Peter." The Catholic Church is the One True Church founded by Christ. Only One! Protestant churches, all contradicting each other, with little remaining of Christ's divine teaching, are two a penny!
