The "Disgraceful Doors" of Our Lady of Sorrows ~ how do $400,000 doors build up the Church?

Go out to the peripheries, to the poor, the downtrodden, the deprived...so Our Holy Father, Pope Francis implores us.

“if we were to remove poverty from the Gospel,
nothing would be understood of Jesus’ message".
Pope Francis

Vox Cantoris asks some very, very serious questions about the obscenely expensive and totally unnecessary doors that have been recently installed at the west-end Toronto church, Our Lady of  Sorrows.

The obscenity - in a city that has great poverty, unemployment - of wasting money on doors is truly staggering.

For all of the boasting of the external "beauty" of these doors, I prefer the true beauty of this church in Africa. They have the Faith. What do we have...?

Euthanasia: the Canadian Crisis deepens ~ "The Proposal" supported by the Canadian Federation of Catholic Physicians must be rejected

"Whoever does not take up the cross, and follow me, is not worthy of me"
Mt 10:38

I wrote a few weeks ago about "The Proposal" which is an effort by good but perhaps frightened people who wish to avoid a confrontation with the full force of the Canadian Medical Association. This is humanly understandable. No one wants to be run over by a train. As one commentator to this blog wrote:

"They see the assisted death train roaring down the tracks and they really don't know what to do, having been long abandoned through the silence of the moral leaders representing Christ, as well as His 'moral theologians'."

The Proposal offers nothing to actively oppose euthanasia; nothing to reverse the advance of death and evil. It merely seeks to create a zone of protection for physicians who are on paper opposed to euthanasia, but in practice, will end up facilitating it via the ideas contained in The Proposal.

It would seem that the genesis of The Proposal comes - at least in part - from misguided efforts in the United States, long in protecting the physicians' comfort, but short in the discomfort of making a radical stand in defense of life - even if it means being stripped of one's medical license, or even facing civil or criminal ramifications. The Proposal contains material cooperation with euthanasia, as has been outlined in my earlier post.

I have read carefully the advise given to Catholic physicians at a blog identified as "The Way of the Lord Jesus". Readers may review the entire convoluted response if they so wish. It is obvious that the entire response is geared towards not reversing the evils in society, but in primarily protecting the physician from discipline for opposing intrinsic evil.

I quote a very interesting section, which is illuminating:

If nothing more is necessary to save you from serious professional or civil liability, I see no reason why you should offer any further advice. But let us suppose that stopping at this point would open you to disciplinary action or a malpractice suit.

So there we have it! No resistance, no positive action, but a consistent backing down; a surrender to the "assisted death train" to protect one's professional and civil standing.

Friends, this does not work. This is a fantasy, a delusion. Opposing euthanasia, as long as no one knows about it is not an option for the Christian. The Roman Empire was defeated by the taking up of the cross. There is no other way.  We are to imitate Christ: Our Lord did not consider his standing with the Sanhedrin or the Pharisees - he proclaimed the Truth, even though it meant the cross. The martyrs through the ages knew this.

Another example. In the United States, the National Catholic Bioethical Center has this to offer a physician if faced with a patient determined to kill themselves:

When all else has failed, if the patient is insistent on pursuing the immoral and harmful choice, health care providers and institutions may be unable to prevent this. Ultimately, the patient is an independent moral agent who is free to decide where and from whom he or she will seek care. The provider or institution may remind the patient of this, and may offer to assist the patient with accomplishing a transfer of care to another provider or institution of the patient’s choosing [and what if the patient's choosing is someone who will proceed with an immoral procedure?], without stating where the patient might go to receive the immoral procedure or otherwise directing the patient to it [they have already done so, if they transfer them to a provider whom they know will proceed with an immoral procedure]. A general list of other providers or institutions based on geographic vicinity or even area of specialty might be provided; however, the list may not be developed based on the criterion of whether they are known or believed to offer the immoral procedure. In practice, this means that the list must include any providers or institutions that fit the chosen criterion (geography, specialty, both, or other) and also oppose the immoral practice. [But there is no mention that providers or institutions that offer the immoral practice will be excluded. A physician needs to determine if  immoral practices are offered, and transfer a patient accordingly. This is like sending someone to a group of stores that may provide healthy food and also poison; yet claiming to be opposed to accessing poison. Nonsense!].

Friends, either one is opposed to euthanasia, or one is not. Either one accepts the cross or one does not. It means accepting all the moral responsibilities with the the vocation of being a physician: yes, it is a vocation first and foremost. It is not a profession!

"Daddy, it hurts"!

Yes, the cross does hurt, but it is the only way of Christian witness, the only way to Heaven.

The author of the Imitation of Christ asks us:

"Why then are you afraid to take up your cross, which leads to the kingdom? In the cross is salvation, in the cross is life, in the cross is protection." (Bk 2. Ch 12)

It is time for Catholic physicians to stand up, to say they will not pander to the Canadian Medical Association. This is a moral issue that goes far, far beyond so-called conscience rights of the physician: it is about repelling, combating the monstrous evil of the the culture of death.

Once again, I call on the Canadian Federation of Catholic Physicians to reject The Proposal.

Where is the "official Catholic media" when it comes to defending Bishop Henry? Why are they not standing up against the totalitarians and sexual deviants?

The secular totalitarian attack against Bishop Fred Henry of Calgary is not an issue just for Calgary or Alberta. Nor, is it an issue for Canada. Being an issue of Truth and Justice, it is an issue that is universal. The forces of evil - the secular totalitarians, are aware of this and they are responding accordingly.

The scandalous pro-homosexualist Crux merely dismissed the conflict between the Bishop and the aggressively anti-Catholic government as a "quixotic question". The equivocating article fails utterly to support Bishop Henry. John Allen Jr. says the government is trying to "accomplish something noble. Proponents of the new gender-identity guidelines want to foster tolerance and diversity...".  We now know this is absolutely false. Transgender activist, Mr. Marcel Panas (aka "Marni") tweeted the other day that he was involved in drawing up the guidelines.

This man who dresses as a woman is the "advisor" to the fascist gov't of Alberta

Ever looking for an opportunity to attack the Church, the militant homosexual organization, New Ways Ministry has been busy attacking the Bishop. New Ways Ministry published a malicious article against His Excellency by the homosexualist and heretic Bob Shine. Is it not sad that Catholics cannot at least defend the Bishop and Christ's Truth with the energy that these dissidents promote evil?

What has been the reaction from the "official Catholic media" in Canada? I have reviewed Salt and Light and the Catholic Register on Facebook. Only a mention of the unhelpful aforementioned article by John Allen Jr is on the Salt and Light page. Nothing else. As to the Catholic Register: nothing. Perhaps something is buried in the back of the hardcopy newspaper which no one reads. Who knows? But better nothing than Allen's bizarre article. So much for the "official Catholic" media. That is the bad news.

The good news, dear friends, is that the "official Catholic" media is dying. It is costly, cumbersome, and has been completely by-passed by blogs. Could better proof of this be the reporting on the Synod? The real future of Catholic media is with bloggers.

This silence is: is shameful, outrageous and is disgusting

This silence is betrayal!

Mary Wagner on euthanasia in Canada: "The Proposal" is "defeatism" it needs to be rejected by the Canadian Federation of Catholic Physicians

The tragic Mgr. Kaas who supported Hitler's Enabling Act
"The Proposal"? Will history judge it to be another "enabling act"?

Several weeks ago I published an article that had its genesis in discussions I had with Mary Wagner over euthanasia just prior to her arrest. In what is now euphemistically called "doctor assisted death" I outlined a number of grave concerns we both had. I strongly believe that material cooperation is evident in the evasive "The Proposal". One wonders why there is such weak resistance to the "death train" as it roars into Canada without opposition.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPSO) website carries this on euthanasia:
Consistent with the Professional Obligations and Human Rights policy, physicians do not have to provide services that conflict with their conscience or religious beliefs. Where a physician declines to provide physician-assisted death for reasons of conscience or religion, he or she must make an effective referral in a timely manner to a non-objecting physician or agency [my emphasis].
It is hard to believe that the CMA or the OMA will crush physicians who actively oppose euthanasia; innumerable physicians are constantly up before their organizations for malpractice or sexual misconduct etc.

Many of these physicians manage to drag our potential disciplinary action for years, much of it only resulting in a slap on the wrist. For example, pervert psychiatrist and sexual predator, Joel Dobrowolski preyed on extremely vulnerable women for over ten years without conclusive action being taken by the CPSO.

I encourage readers to explore the CPSO website for a never ending stream of malpractice and sexual misconduct. Readers will notice that "discipline" many times does not involve dismissal for even an incompetent physician. Perplexing indeed is the lack of courage to stand up to an organization that does not seem to move with rigor against real malpractice.

It may well be that the CMA will take resistance to euthanasia much more seriously than medical malpractice or even sexual abuse. Totalitarianism is growing in this country, with opposition to the dictatorship of moral relativism not permitted. However, physicians must be prepared to do the right thing no matter what the consequences are.

Catholics must resist. Compromise is not an option. We have the tragedy of the Catholic Centre Party and Mgr. Ludwig Kass as examples not to follow. Evil never backs off when sensing weakness.

Mary's assessment of "The Proposal" is as follows:

Having read “The Proposal” to the C.M.A. (offered by the Christian Medical and Dental Society and with the support of the Canadian Federation of Catholic Physicians and [the] Canadian Physicians for Life), I fear that these associations, despite their earnest desire to resist doctor-abetted suicide, have succumbed to defeatism.  “The Proposal” expresses a willingness to engage in what I understand to be formal co-operation with a patient’s request for abetted suicide:

“The Proposal” states that “physicians have a duty to provide complete information on all options and advise on how to access a separate, central information, counselling, and referral service”.  Further, the assertion is made that one’s autonomy includes the right to take one’s life: (“The Proposal”) “respects the autonomy of the patient to access all legal services while at the same time protecting physicians’ conscience rights”. (Let us recall the normal human response to someone on the verge of jumping off a bridge and compare the difference).

In addition, the language employed feeds into the push to accept doctor-abetted suicide.  Language matters.  Not only in “The Proposal”, but also in Christian/Catholic media, doctor-abetted suicide has been replaced with such terms as “physician-assisted death”, “assisted death”, and “medical aid in dying”.  Such language obscures the truth and will contribute to the acceptance of this evil.  As Mother Teresa said, “words that do not bear the Light of Christ only increase the darkness”.

Bishop Fred Henry: The Lion of Calgary ~ how a Canadian bishop is fighting the advance of fascism

H. E. Bishop Fred Henry of Calgary
Bishop Fred Henry, the Lion of Calgary! In 2005 Human Life International (HLI) designated their Cardinal von Galen award for this prelate who, in their words:

...has an impressive track record of speaking out and enforcing Catholic doctrine in a country where it is growing increasingly dangerous to do so. In 2002 he cancelled the wedding of a member of his diocese who, it was discovered, was an employee at an abortion mill; in 2003 he stated publicly that then-Prime Minister Jean Chretien was putting his soul in danger by legalizing same-sex marriage in Canada; he has aimed blistering criticism at legislation for assisted suicide and euthanasia and said that if he were his bishop he would excommunicate Prime Minister Paul Martin because he is “guilty of a grave offense against God” for his support of abortion and same-sex marriage!

Bishop Henry has been threatened on numerous occasions by the fascist State. HLI pointed out he had been slandered by a newspaper magnate and threatened to be dragged before the pesudo "courts" of a so-called Human Rights Tribunal because the bishop dared to proclaim the truth about marriage. But Bishop Henry is not a man to be easily intimidated or silenced, as the past few weeks can attest! To the contrary.

Now, he is being persecuted by a government that, as the bishop wrote: breathes "pure secularism"; that is "totalitarian". This same neo-fascist government is aided, built up by powerful financial forces that maintain an organized militantly secular media, devoid of any conception of truth or morality. This media is devoted to the promotion of the dictatorship of moral relativism. It promotes a panorama of evils, as outlined in Bishop Henry's Pastoral Letter, "Heal the wounds..."

 His Excellency wrote:

In my lifetime, the mainstream liberal culture first championed divorce; divorce was followed by contraception and the proliferation of pornography; contraception by abortion and euthanasia; euthanasia by homosexual conduct; and homosexual conduct by the entire abolition of distinctive gender.

But all these assaults are really attacks on the primal truth of the book of Genesis, "Male and female he created them" [Gen. 1:27].

After Bishop Henry denounced the evils of gender ideology in his Pastoral Letter, Totalitarianism in Alberta, he was immediately attacked by the media, who also eagerly sought out the opinions of dissident "Catholics". They thought that Bishop Henry would be isolated and cowed into silence; they have miscalculated! The bishop struck back with an even more powerful follow-up Letter, and he is receiving international recognition and support from around the world. It is a good thing to alert the world that Canada has slid into a subtle but malignant fascism.

But it is not enough to know, Catholics, Orthodox, Protestants, Jews and men and women of good will must take action to stop gender ideology and protect innocent children. Minister of Education, David Eggen, the public face of the NDPs aggressive anti-Catholic push, must be stopped in his attempt to force gender ideology on school children and onto society. As the following tweets demonstrate, he seems to be under considerable influence from militant "transgendered" activists. One activist, a man - who has taken to wearing women's clothing - by the name of Marni Panas, seems to wield sway over the Minister, admitting in a Tweet that he was involved in writing up the gender ideology guidelines.

Minister of Education approves of Mr. Panas transvestitism.

Militant transgender activist ADMITS to writing the Guidelines!

I post a few further screenshots for readers to appreciate the evil of gender ideology, and the totalitarian mentality of its advocates.

Mr. Panas directly attacks Bp. Henry.
A question: how can a man who dresses as a woman speak of "reason"?

Militant homosexualists ideologues deem Bp. Henry "narrow minded, bigoted..."

The false love of "the world, the flesh and the devil" (cf. 1 John 2:16)
Minister Eggen retweets what it is all about! - Gender ideology

Eggen could do nothing if not for the powerful, financial forces that control the captive media, which has long been a monolithic Propaganda arm of the "dictatorship of relativism". The following video demonstrates their devotion to gender ideology and the militant homosexualist agenda.

David Eggen's promotion of gender ideology and the homosexualist agenda is objective evil. With it, he is seeking the destruction of the children, by pouring spiritual poison into their souls. Mr. Eggen is an evil man.

Therefore, it is only fitting to take up the words of Sacred Scripture that Bishop Henry quoted in his Pastoral Letter, Totalitarianism in Alberta, Part II, towards evil-doers.

"you son of the devil, you enemy of all that is right, full of every sort of deceit and fraud. Will you not stop twisting the straight paths of the Lord?" [Acts 13:9-10]

We are to follow the Lord, not the world, the flesh or the devil - and the "guidelines" that the devil offers of gender ideology, of self-love, of lust (c.f. 1 John 2:16).

We are moving towards a dictatorship of relativism which does not recognize anything as certain and which has as its highest goal one's own ego and one's own desires. However, we have a different goal: the Son of God, true man (Bishop Henry)

BREAKING: Bishop Fred Henry of Calgary comes back against the totalitarians with an even more powerful Pastoral Letter!

H. E. Bishop Fred Henry of Calgary
[Update: 2016-01-28: 12:57 p.m. Bishop Henry being attacked by militant transgender activists]
In a follow-up Pastoral Letter to the faithful, His Excellency, Bishop Frederick Henry of Calgary, exposes the insidious evil of the totalitarian NDP government of the Province of Alberta. His Excellency is truly a Shepherd in these dark times.
Bishop Henry's first letter, outlining the fascistic mentality of the NDP regime is, in my opinion, one of the most important statements ever coming from a Catholic bishop in this country. His Excellency will - unless there is a dramatic reversal of the direction of not just Alberta, but Canada - be proven correct. Canada is sliding into a form of fascism with "white gloves". But inside the glove is an iron fist to smash all those who refuse to bend the knee to the tyrannical dogma of moral relativism.

As more and more people become imbued with the madness of relativism - not being able to discern right from wrong, truth from error, liberty from license - they will blindly trod the path of fascism, believing they are free, but slaves, poisoned with the totalitarianism of pure secularism.

Dear friends, please visit the Diocese of Calgary website, read this letter, study it, pray on it. Ensure to write to the bishop to tell him you support him! Pray for him!

His Excellency, the Bishop of Calgary wrote as follows:

In my recent Pastoral Letter, I wrote that the Alberta Government Gender Guidelines issued on January 13 show no evidence of consultation with, or sensitivity to, the Catholic community. They breathe pure secularism. This approach and directive smack of the madness of relativism and the forceful imposition of a particular narrow-minded anti-Catholic ideology.
If you are reading this piece in the hopes of discovering an apology and/or a retraction, you might as well stop reading right now. That's simply not going to happen.
I have received considerable support for what I said and the way in which I said it. Nevertheless, there were a few "nay-sayers" some have called for my resignation, others have resorted to unpublishable name calling, and of course, there were several references to the famous catch-all these days, "Who are you to judge?" The later suggesting that I was espousing a teaching contrary to the openness of Pope Francis.
In point of fact, Pope Francis has said quite a bit about gender. "The acceptance of our bodies as God's gift is vital for welcoming and accepting the entire world as a gift from the Father and our common home, whereas thinking that we enjoy absolute power over our own bodies turns, often subtly, into thinking that we enjoy absolute power over creation. Learning to accept our body, to care for it and to respect its fullest meaning, is an essential element of any genuine human ecology. Also, valuing one's own body in its femininity or masculinity is necessary if I am going to be able to recognize myself in an encounter with someone who is different. In this way we can joyfully accept the specific gifts of another man or woman, the work of God the Creator, and find mutual enrichment. It is not a healthy attitude which would seek to cancel out sexual difference because it no longer knows how to confront it" [Laudato Si 155].
Furthermore, in Sacred Scripture there are different but interrelated sets of texts about judgment. Without attempting to be exhaustive, there are at least three that are especially noteworthy:
1) Warnings about judgment: "Stop judging that you may not be judged. For as you judge, so will you be judged...." This is not an injunction against judgment, but a warning that the judgment should be rendered with a good heart free from hypocrisy, arrogance, meanness of spirit, or hate. Consequently, "remove the beam from your own eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter from your brother's eye." The principal purpose of a judgment is to help a brother or sister avoid debilitating actions and improve. The awesome burden of judging is the realization that we will be "judged as we have judged." Some cite the incident of the woman caught in adultery and brought to Jesus by those who would stone her as evidence that we should not judge others. Nothing could be further from the truth. The incident manifests God's mercy and loathing of hypocrisy, but he did judge her behavior as evidenced by his admonition: "Go and sin no more."
2) Instances of judgment abound: Peter to Simon the magician "...for your heart is not right before God. Repent of this wickedness of yours... for I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and the chain of wickedness" [Acts 8: 20-23]. Paul to Elymas, "you son of the devil, you enemy of all that is right, full of every sort of deceit and fraud. Will you not stop twisting the straight paths of the Lord?" [Acts 13:9-10]; and Paul to Peter, "But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he clearly was wrong" [Gal 2:11].
3) Cautions particularly to overseers or leaders about judgments: "Thus says the Lord: you, son of man, I have appointed watchman for the house of Israel; when you hear me say anything, you shall warn them for me if I tell the wicked, 'oh, wicked one, you shall surely die,' and you do not speak out to dissuade the wicked one from his way, he shall die for his guilt, but I will hold you responsible for his death. But if you warn the wicked, trying to turn him from his way, and he refuses to turn from his way, he shall die for his guilt, but you shall save yourself" [Ezekiel 33: 7-9].

Paul's advice to Timothy is difficult for some of us: "Avoid foolish and ignorant debates, for you know that they breed quarrels. A slave of the Lord should not quarrel, but should be gentle with everyone, able to teach, tolerant, correcting opponents with kindness. It may be that God will grant them repentance that leads to knowledge of the truth, and that they may return to their senses out of the devil's snare, where they are entrapped by him, for his will" [2 Tim 2: 23-26].
Only God can judge the state of the human soul but it is pure nonsense to suggest we cannot and should not judge human behaviour. Reluctance to judge moral behaviour is the inevitable consequence of moral relativism and moral subjectivism that has eroded confidence in the ability to determine objective moral truth on which sound judgment is based.
The last word on this subject belongs to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI: "How many winds of doctrine we have known in recent decades, how many ideological currents, how many ways of thinking. The small boat of thought of many Christians has often been tossed about by these waves thrown from one extreme to the other.... Every day new sects are created and what Saint Paul says about human trickery comes true, with cunning which tries to draw those into error [cf Ephesians 4, 14].
Having a clear Faith, based on the Creed of the Church, is often labelled today as a fundamentalism. Whereas, relativism, which is letting oneself be tossed and 'swept along by every wind of teaching,' looks like the only attitude acceptable to today's standards. We are moving towards a dictatorship of relativism which does not recognize anything as certain and which has as its highest goal one's own ego and one's own desires. However, we have a different goal: the Son of God, true man. He is the measure of true humanism. Being an 'Adult' means having a faith which does not follow the waves of today's fashions or the latest novelties.
A faith which is deeply rooted in friendship with Christ is adult and mature. It is this friendship which opens us up to all that is good and gives us the knowledge to judge true from false, and deceit from truth" [Way of the Cross in 2005 for Good Friday].

BREAKING: Sammy Yatim: police found guilty of attempted murder ~ now, when will the police stop arresting two harmless women?

Sammy Yatim, requiescat in pace

When young Sammy Yatim, was shot dead in Toronto, this blog denounced the outrageous slaying of this young man. Sammy was slain as numerous police strolled and milled about, manifesting by their behaviour that the youth was not a threat. We argued when this happened that Sammy could have easily been disarmed by a mental health nurse.

Sammy being murdered by police in downtown Toronto
The slaying of Sammy is indicative of a police force that is more an "occupation" force, than a "serve and protect" force. Michael Eligon, another young man suffering mental health concerns was killed by police in a back alley. Michael had fled from a local hospital. Likewise, Michael MacIssac, also known for having mental health issues was gunned down by Durham police.

Police brutality is a totally predictable outgrowth of non-community policing, heavily imbued with an "obey the law" mentality, even if the law is evil. This blog has also warned about the growth of fascism in this country: when policing means enforcing political ideology the line in the sand is crossed towards eventual totalitarianism. For example, the rigorous police enforcement of illegal "bubble zone" laws, thereby prohibiting peaceful protest against abortion.

Peaceful protestor, Mary Wagner
being arrest this past December in west end Toronto

The constant arrests of Mary Wagner and Linda Gibbons for this gentle, peaceful protest is simply outrageous. The jailing of these women for months for following their consciences, whilst molesters, dangerous repeat offenders are given sentences less than a month, shows that political show trials are alive and well, and that the police serve the establishment elite.

"why mom, when I have so much love to give", on a public sidewalk

I close by quoting Vox Cantoris:

As for Sammy Yatin; may he find peace in the arms of the LORD from whatever mental pain he suffered; may his shedding of blood and suffering at the hands of evil men who had no hearts, be his purgatory and may the merciful Father who desires none of his children to be lost bring Sammy to his bosom through the grace of the Holy Spirit and the redeeming blood of Christ through his Church.

Rest in peace, my little Syrian brother.

A full report on the conviction of the police slaying of Sammy may be read here.

More madness from the IEC in the Philippines: Fr. Mark Francis CSV: the Novu Ordo Mass must be constantly changing

Fr. Mark Francis, CSV, a well-known advocate of liturgical innovations, joined Bugnini disciple, Archbishop Piero Marini in having some interesting things to say at the International Eucharistic Congress being held in Cebu, Philippines. At least he is honest: he wants the Novus Ordo Mass to be constantly changing; you will notice his underlying reason: it is man centred. When it is man centred it has only one result: self worship.

The Poisoning of the American Mind: Pius XI on capitalism ~ " "free competition has destroyed itself...economic dictatorship has supplanted the free market..."

I may be wrong, but the only prominent American Catholic layman who is ringing the alarm bell on the foundational errors and dangers of the American experiment, is Michael Voris. America is founded on Liberty, not truth, A big, big, capitol error, that has come home to roost. Religion then, comes under the "god" of religious liberty, irrespective of truth. Hence, Catholic truth is put on the same level as protestant error, Jewish perfidy, Islamic infidelism, and even satanism. Everyone has the "right" to religious liberty". A grave error - the halfway house to atheism.

America is now imploding because of her foundation on Freemasonry and protestantism. The figures of America's two greatest influences loom large: Henry VIII, and the conduit of the effects of his  break with Rome, the philosopher of liberalism, John Locke. It would be from the poisoned well of Locke (though not exclusively) that the "founding fathers" imbibed their philosophy, setting the stage for America's inevitable slow poisoning.

America's Founding Father: Henry VIII

Let us now briefly review the contradiction between the capitalist system - so beloved of poisoned American Catholics' minds - and the Catholic view of economics.

Pius XI, (Quadragesimo Anno):

Yet when the State brings private ownership into harmony with the needs of the common good, it does not commit a hostile act against private owners but rather does them a friendly service; for it thereby effectively prevents the private possession of goods, which the Author of nature in His most wise providence ordained for the support of human life, from causing intolerable evils and thus rushing to its own destruction; it does not destroy private possessions, but safeguards them; and it does not weaken private property rights, but strengthens them.

Furthermore, a person's superfluous income, that is, income which he does not need to sustain life fittingly and with dignity, is not left wholly to his own free determination. Rather the Sacred Scriptures and the Fathers of the Church constantly declare in the most explicit language that the rich are bound by a very grave precept to practice almsgiving.

The ultimate consequences of the individualist spirit in economic life are these: free competition has destroyed itself; economic dictatorship has supplanted the free market; unbridled ambition for power has likewise succeeded greed for gain; all economic life has become tragically hard, inexorable, and cruel. The State, which although it ought to sit on high supreme, free from all partiality and intent upon the one common good and justice, is become a slave, surrendered and delivered to the passions and greed of men. And as to international relations, two different streams have issued from the one fountain-head: On the one hand, economic nationalism or even economic imperialism; on the other, a no less deadly and accursed internationalism of finance or international imperialism whose country is where profit is.

A market unrestricted by any law opens to everybody attracts large numbers to buying and selling goods, and they, their one aim being to make quick profits with the least expenditure of work, raise or lower prices by their uncontrolled business dealings so rapidly according to their own caprice and greed that they nullify the wisest forecasts of producers. The laws passed to promote corporate business, while dividing and limiting the risk of business, have given occasion to the most sordid license. Observe that consciences are little affected by this reduced obligation of accountability; that furthermore, by hiding under the shelter of a joint name, the worst of injustices and frauds are penetrated; and that, too, directors of business companies, forgetful of their trust, betray the rights of those whose savings they have undertaken to administer.

Restraint enforced vigorously by governmental authority could have banished these enormous evils and even forestalled them; this restraint, however, has too often been sadly lacking. There quickly developed a body of economic teaching far removed from the true moral law, and, as a result, completely free rein was given to human passions.

More to follow...
