Pope Francis DID consecrate the World to Our Lady of Fatima

From what I have gathered, listening to an Italian broadcast, the Pope "entrusted" or "consigned" the World to Our Lady this October 13, 2013; but there was no consecration. My understanding is that there is a distinct theological distinction. Interesting to note that there is nothing on any of the Vatican news agencies pertaining to the Pope's prayer at all. Nothing at all. Where is the prayer?

Catholic prayers of consecration, use that very word for particular reason: it means a total and complete giving. There is a vast difference between consecration and entrustment.

UPDATE: N.B. Hat tip to Susan Fox at "Christ's Faithful Witness Blog" for providing an updated full text of the prayer. "Consecration" was indeed used.

  3. Can you explain the difference between consecration and entrustment? Here is a link to a story with some of the words that the pope said. http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/pope-entrusts-world-to-immaculate-heart-of-mary/

  4. Anonymous, I have no idea who "Fr" Gruner is.

  5. Why this is an issue, is, because as I understand it, "entrustment" was first used by Pope John Paul II, who wished to avoid using "consecration". St. Louis de Montfort and St. Maximillian use the latter with the full implications of the word. "Entrustment" seems to have the reservations that some post-conciliar theologians had vis-a-vis their particular Marian theology.
    Pius XII "consecrated" Russia in 1952; John Paul II "entrusted" the World, I believe, in 1984.

  6. Pius XII consecrated Russia, but not with the bishops, as were the instructions.

    It is Father Gruner without the deprecating quotation marks.

    Russia has not been consecrated. Nor has it converted - to Catholicism.

    Vision of Fatima (Little, Brown & Company, 1948), authored by Fr. T.M. McGlynn, wherein Sr. Lucia stated to the following to him: "'No', said Sister Lucy, 'Not the world! Russia! Russia!'

  7. From Zenit, here is the text of the "Consecration" Pope Francis used Sunday. Holy Mary Virgin of Fatima,

    with renewed gratitude for your maternal presence

    we join our voice to that of all the generations

    who call you blessed.

    We celebrate in you the works of God,

    who never tires of looking down with mercy

    upon humanity, afflicted with the wound of sin,

    to heal it and save it.

    Accept with the benevolence of a Mother

    the act of consecration that we perform today with confidence,

    before this image of you that is so dear to us.

    We are certain that each of us is precious in your eyes

    and that nothing of all that lives in our hearts is unknown to you.

    We let ourselves be touched by your most sweet regard

    and we welcome the consoling caress of your smile.

    Hold our life in your arms:

    bless and strengthen every desire for good;

    revive and nourish faith;

    sustain and enlighten hope;

    awaken and animate charity;

    guide all of us along the path of holiness.

    Teach us your own preferential love

    for the little and the poor,

    for the excluded and the suffering,

    for sinners and the downhearted:

    bring everyone under your protection

    and entrust everyone to your beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus.

    Amen.

  8. Thank-you very much Susan. I will amend the post accordingly. This is what happens when the Roman authorities leave things hanging in the air.

  9. Boy Heresy Hunter, that is a very outdated book. After that date Sr. Lucia said that the consecration of Russia was made by Pope John Paul II in 1984, and Sr. Lucia approved it. See this link: http://www.ewtn.com/expert/answers/Fatima1984.htm
    This is from the letters of Sr. Lucia Santos, OCD on the Consecration.
    Yes we do wonder why there wasn't this wonderful conversion of Russia, although the Iron Curtain fell. But really the world dragged their feet on this one, so so much more damage was done. Russia DID SPREAD HER ERRORS around the world. We are experiencing it now in the United States and Canada! We can't blame the popes. We have to blame ourselves. Pope St. Gregory in Saturday's Office of the Readings laid it out -- why we don't get holy priests, holy bishops, why our sermons are terrible, why consecrations are not done on time --He said the harvest is great, but the laborers are few. He said, "Look about you and see how full the world is of priests, yet in God's harvest a laborer is rarely to be found; for although we have accepted the priestly office, we do not fulfill its demands." The reason according to Pope St. Gregory? "Frequently, the preachers' tongue is bound fast on account of his own wickedness; while on the other hand it sometimes happens that because of the people's sins, the word of preaching is withdrawn from those who preside over the assembly." We are a rebellious people. The Word of God is being withheld from us. Just like when Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the 10 commandments, and found the people worshiping the golden calf. He threw the 10 commandments to the ground and broke them. The punishment was they would not be allowed to know the Law (yet). They would not be given the TRUTH. After repentance, yes. Often we have heretics in positions of importance in the Catholic Church. Their punishment is that they will not know the TRUTH! But why are we punished with them? There is the second part of the equation, if we are a rebellious people, Pope St. Gregory says, the word of God will be withheld from you. Here's Pope St. Gregory again talking about a passage from Ezekiel: "He clearly means this: the word of preaching will be taken away from you because as long as this people irritates me by their deeds, they are unworthy to hear the exhortation of truth. It is not easy to know for whose sinfulness the preacher's word is withheld, but it is indisputable that the shepherd's silence while often injurious to himself will always harm his flock." I have been saying for years the priest abuse scandal would never have happened if the flock, which was largely contracepting itself, had demanded holiness from its bishops and priests. The flock doesn't want holy priests because they would require that they themselves make a change in their lives. Now I find out someone like Pope St. Gregory might agree with me. We can actually be responsible for the lack of catechesis and good sermonizing in the Church as well as consecrations made ON TIME!. And those of us -- like you and me -- who do want holy priests must suffer with those who don't. So Thy Will be done on earth as it is in heaven. How is it done in heaven? PROMPTLY! But we drag our feet on earth. We are all guilty of that. God bless you. Susan Fox

We believe in a good argument. That means NO ad hominem attacks. This also includes Pope Francis. Further, referring to him by any other name, may or may not indicate a schismatic attitude, and given the confusion in the Church your comment will NOT be published. Comments are those of the commentators and not those of this blog. You may use a pseudonym... we do... Behave like a guest in our living room and you will be fine.
