The Abuse of the Mandatum

And thou shalt bring Aaron and his sons to the door of the tabernacle of the testimony, and having washed them with water, Thou shalt put on them the holy vestments, that they may minister to me, and that the unction of them may prosper to an everlasting priesthood.
(Exodus 40:12-13)

The washing of the hands and feet is a Jewish thing. Our Blessed Saviour was carrying out a very Jewish action - he was preparing his Apostles for the everlasting priesthood of the new and Eternal Covenant.

The Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments issued this 2008 judgment with regards to the ongoing, world-wide abuse of the mandatum.

  1. Given that the pope has already (in 2013) violated the proscription against washing women's feet, the bishops now have an out, an excuse coming "right from the top", to ignore or laugh off any complaints issued to the local chancery, especially if reference is made to the letter you received in 2008.

Don't mean to be a downer - and this post is correct and needs to be disseminated, but it's too late. The pope has set an example and the Canadian bishops - who by and large are no friends of Orthodoxy - will chuck any reports of violations right into the waste basket.

We believe in a good argument. That means NO ad hominem attacks. This also includes Pope Francis. Further, referring to him by any other name, may or may not indicate a schismatic attitude, and given the confusion in the Church your comment will NOT be published. Comments are those of the commentators and not those of this blog. You may use a pseudonym... we do... Behave like a guest in our living room and you will be fine.
